2018 Year in Review

We started Objectively with the mission of working with academic and research institutions to make knowledge more consumable, actionable, and impactful. In just our first year, we collaborated with our clients to bring over two dozen projects to life. We even picked up some recognition along the way, scoring our first nomination for a Webby Award and winning three American Graphic Design Awards for editorial and internet design. As we say goodbye to 2018, here are a few highlights of some of our favorite projects from our first year.

The Lab @ DC

Randomized Controlled Trial of the MPD’s Body-Worn Camera Program

In 2016, The Lab @ DC, a team of applied scientists based out of the Washington, D.C. Office of the City Administrator, partnered with the Metropolitan Police Department to study its body-worn camera program. The team designed a rigorous multi-year field experiment to begin identifying the impacts of body-worn cameras in the District. Objectively collaborated with The Lab @ DC to release the results of this high profile scientific study through an interactive, consumable digital experience. The report website was nominated for a Webby Award in the Government & Civil Innovation category.

Sourcelist

Recognizing the chronic lack of representation at the intersection of Silicon Valley and the Washington Beltway, Brookings Institution Fellow and Lawfare Executive Editor Susan Hennessey set out to compile a list of women in tech policy. Objectively collaborated with Susan and the Governance Studies program at the Brookings Institution on a project funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to turn Susan's initial vision into Sourcelist, an award-winning website for aiding, journalists, conference organizers, policymakers, and others in identifying and connecting with expert sources beyond those in their existing Rolodexes. It is built on the principle that technology policy stands to benefit from the inclusion of the ideas, perspectives, and recommendations of a broader array of people.

Refugee Connectivity

A Survey of Mobile Phones, Mental Health, and Privacy at a Syrian Refugee Camp in Greece

Refugee Connectivity: A Survey of Mobile Phones, Mental Health, and Privacy at a Syrian Refugee Camp in Greece provides new evidence of the critical role internet connectivity and mobile devices play in the lives and wellbeing of this population. The report is the result of 2017 field research by Data & Society, the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative’s Signal Program on Human Security and Technology, and the Centre for Innovation at Leiden University. The findings are based on a survey of 135 adults amongst the 750 residents at Ritsona Refugee Camp in Greece. Objectively partnered with Data & Society to design an award-winning layout for the report.

Open Source Hardware Certification

Open source hardware gives people the freedom to control their technology while sharing knowledge and encouraging commerce through the open exchange of designs. The Open Source Hardware Association developed a certification program with the open source hardware community as part of a multi-year process. Objectively collaborated with OSHWA and the Technology Law & Policy Clinic at NYU Law on a project funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to design and develop a new learning experience and home for certified open source hardware projects.

Building Inclusive Ecosystems with Intentionality

A Strategy to Enhance Support for D.C.’s Women Founders

Building Inclusive Ecosystems with Intentionality: A Strategy to Enhance Support for D.C.’s Women Founders examines opportunities to further enhance inclusion and support of current and future women founders in Washington, D.C.’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. The report was authored by Deloris Wilson, Inclusive Innovation Fellow for the Institute of Technology Law & Policy at Georgetown Law and BEACON: The D.C. Women Founders Initiative. Objectively collaborated with Deloris to design the groundbreaking report on entrepreneurial ecosystem development.

From Voicemails to Votes

From Voicemails to Votes is a human-centered investigation by The OpenGov Foundation into the systems, tools, constraints and human drivers that fuel how Congress engages with constituent input. As covered by WIRED, the report “provides a blueprint not only for congressional offices pushing for more efficient tools to track public input, but for advocacy groups vying to be heard, and for technology companies that could help the two better connect.” Objectively collaborated with the OpenGov Foundation to design the report layout.
